Your Ultimaker S5 Now Prints Metal With The Metal Expansion Kit

Ultimaker S5 Metal Expansion Kit Coming Soon!

Ultimaker Metal Expansion Kit

The Ultimaker S5’s generous build volume and ability to print high-performance thermoplastics make it a snip for rapid prototyping. Still, until now, metal 3D printing has been out of the reach of S5 users.

The Metal Expansion Kit changes this with everything you need to 3D print metal parts while maintaining your warranty. You can print and process parts on-site or send a green part to BASF’s network of certified services and get it back in ten days.

Ultimaker’s goal is to create an end-to-end workflow from design to processing, enabling a new range of applications for the Ultimaker S5.

Here’s what the Metal Expansion Kit includes:

  • Ultrafuse® 17-4 PH
  • Ultrafuse® Support Layer
  • Ultimaker Print Core CC 0.4
  • Ultimaker Print Core DD 0.4
  • Packaging for green parts
  • Magigoo Pro Metal adhesive
  • Cura with metal profiles
  • Metal FFF courses through Ultimaker Academy

The kit can produce off-the-shelf parts like tools, jigs and fixtures, replacing traditional processes like CNC machining.

The print cores are designed to print BASF Forward AM Ultrafuse® 17-4 PH filament with a BASF Forward AM Ultrafuse® Support Layer. The Ultimaker Print Core CC 0.4 and Ultimaker Print Core DD 0.4 handle the stress of printing metals, ensuring reliable printing from single runs to 24/7 continuous printing.

Ultrafuse® 17-4PH is an interesting filament comprising metal powder with a polymer binder for Fused Filament Fabrication. Printed parts transform into solid metal after de-binding and sintering using industry-standard processes. It is heat-treatable and suitable for mechanical and chemical applications.

Overall, this is an excellent update for the Ultimaker S5, opening up new opportunities and applications for 3D printing. If you have wanted to print metals for a while, there’s no better time to give it a go!

The kit is expected to launch soon. You can register for updates here.
