3D printer manufacturer Ultimaker has started 2016 with a bang, launching two new 3D printers at CES Las Vegas 2016.
The printers, which are called the Ultimaker 2+ and Ultimaker 2 Extended+, are both successors to existing printers in the Ultimaker range. They will take over the flagship role occupied by the award-winning Ultimaker 2 and Ultimaker 2 Extended with immediate effect. They bring with them a range of upgrades that Ultimaker chose as a result of user feedback, including a new geared feeder, swappable nozzle system and improved airflow for optimal cooling.
Ultimaker’s latest 3D printers have been launched on the back of a successful 2015, in which the company has seen an expansion of sales globally. Their annual revenue doubled in 2015 and their products have seen interest from a variety of industries, including aerospace, engineering and design.
Announcing the launch of their new 3D printers in a press release, Jos Burger, the CEO of Ultimaker, said: “We are excited to release two new 3D printers at CES this year. The Ultimaker 2+ and Ultimaker 2 Extended+ are results of countless collaborations and insightful feedback we have received from the Ultimaker community. Both printers feature crucial upgrades based on what our customers are looking for in a 3D printer.”
Ultimaker 2+ and Ultimaker 2 Extended+: Features
The Ultimaker 2+ and Ultimaker 2 Extended+ can be thought of as updates to the Ultimaker 2 and Ultimaker 2 Extended. They share the same 223 x 223 x 205 mm and 223 x 223 x 305 mm build volumes as their predecessors. The new models also look similar to their predecessors; they also offer the same X, Y, Z accuracy and the heated build plate remains the same.
But this is where the similarities end. Here’s everything you need to know about what’s new:
Geared feeder
New to the Ultimaker 2+ and Ultimaker 2 Extended+ is a geared feeder. This powerful and innovative feed system allows you to easily switch between filaments and change the feed pressure, to optimise prints. It also has the benefit of greater print consistently, because materials are less likely to skip during printing.
Swappable nozzles
Users can now switch between 0.25, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 mm nozzles for greater control over print detail and depth, or to speed up the printing process. Nozzles can be changed in a matter of seconds making working with different materials, and printing multiple parts, easier. This new nozzle system also eases maintenance.
Improved cooling
The Ultimaker 2+ and Ultimaker 2 Extended+ have new fan caps that optimise airflow. These fan caps distribute air evenly right below the nozzle mid-print. The benefit of this feature is more consistency to prints. Prints are smoother than ever before, with exceptional surface quality prior to any sanding or finishing.
Faster nozzle heat time
To improve the efficiency of their printers for engineering applications, Ultimaker has reworked the nozzle heating process for the 2+ and 2 Extended+. Nozzles now heat up in under 1 minute, versus the 2 minutes it would take with the Ultimaker 2 and Ultimaker 2 Extended. As a result, getting started 3D printing is faster than ever.
In addition to these features, the new printers can still be used with third party filament, and they are compatible with Mac OS X, Windows and Linux machines, with support for file types STL, OBJ and DAE.
